Holy Feast – A Sacrament

Food gives strength to our body. Feast usually refers to food that has variety of tastes. Holy feast helps us to spiritually flourish and it is useful for our spiritual growth. Usually, Feast is prepared for functions or celebrations. Holy feast is established by the Lord for the people of God.

I. Introduction

1. Body of Lord Jesus Christ

Lord Jesus Christ is the head of the body, the church (Colossians 1:18). Lord has appointed his ministers for feeding the church. Among the ministers of God, the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers are like that of fingers of the right hand that feed the body, the church.

Brothers, what shall we do? When the people asked Peter, he replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38). Everyone should receive this spiritual experience.

2. True Repentance

A person should regret for the sins committed in the past and decide that he would not commit such sins again. He should stop worshiping idols and accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and saviour. That is what we call true repentance.

3. Forgiveness of sins

Forgiveness of sins refer to the deliverance from the punishment a person receives for all the sins he had committed in the past. For this he has to confess his sins to the Lord. He should also believe for sure that the Lord has forgiven all his sins he has committed so far. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (I John 1:9)

4. Baptism

Man is born with natural sin. That’s why whenever an opportunity arises he is prone to commit sin. This natural sin gets buried in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ during baptism. This has been symbolized by immersion of oneself in the water. One who has committed himself in the waters of baptism has been delivered from the temptation of sins.

5. Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Receiving the Holy Spirit is the fourth spiritual experience. While a person receives the Holy Spirit the life of God enter into his spirit. Ephesians 4:18 speaks of "the life of God." This is what referred in bible as born in spirit. “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John 3:6-8).

6. Pure Spiritual Milk

After attaining spiritual birth experience through Holy Spirit, in order to grow in the spiritual life there is pure spiritual milk, the milk of the word. “Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.“ (I Peter 2:3). Therefore we cannot claim that, receiving the Holy Spirit alone is a fulfilling spiritual life. A person who is born in spirit should read the word of God, meditate and live according to the word of God.

7. Strong Food or Strong meat

Milk is not food for babies or children alone it is a food for everyone. Still when a person grows physically, in order to grow strong he has to eat strong food. “But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” (Hebrews 5:14). Strong food refers to the words of righteousness. Words of righteousness tell us to leave our self righteousness and things, to embrace the righteousness of God. Holy feast is also strong food for the growth of the Christian believers. Those believers who participate in the holy feast will receive the spiritual growth.
